Spanish Churros

For a passionate cook there are no limits of trying and testing new recipes over and over again. For me kitchen is nothing less than a science laboratory where everyday somethings are discovered and certain things are invented with inevitable failures of course.Once while watching a food channel on t.v i saw a celebrity chef making these creepy looking things called churros. But at that point i did not pay a lot of attention to it and changed the channel until after a year when suddenly i remembered the name churros. And thus, i wanted to make them.Like every student before writing an exam needs to study their subjects well.Likewise, even i had to watch and learn various recipes before i made these into my kitchen(watching a single recipe and running into the kitchen won't do.Though i liked the "all recipes" video the most). Now some of them might be wondering what are churros anyway.Well its a really easy and simple fried dough usually dusted with cinnamon and sugar.Once you try these cute little beauties you would want to make more. The traditional shape of churros are usually long twisted ones but i tried shaping them into tiny hearts. Before jumping onto the recipe i would like to say that my first 3 attempts of frying the churros in a single day was just an utter failure. But then i perfected them. There are certain tricks to the trade that very few will disclose to you.Look at the tips section to make your perfect and delicious batch of churros.

Ingredients Serves-2 people

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 2 1/2 tbsp of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of powdered or caster sugar mixed with cinnamon powder
  • 2 tbsp of oil
  • oil for deep frying
  • Pipping bag and star shaped nozzle
Method

  1. Heat a medium saucepan.Add in the water, sugar, salt and oil.
  2. Stir it till the sugar dissolves.Once the mixture comes to a boil switch off the heat.Pour in the flour and start mixing till it all comes together in form of a smooth super soft dough.

  3. Transfer it into a bowl and let it cool for a while.
  4. Take a piping bag made of cloth or any strong material as when we pipe the churros out the material should be such that it can sustain the pressure.Attach a star tip to it.Fill the bag with the dough and keep aside.
  5.  Pour sufficient amount of oil in a deep heavy bottomed skillet.Wait till the oil becomes hot.
  6. Take your piping bag on top of the oil and pipe the churros out of the piping bags and once you get the desired length snip it off with the help of scissors and drop it into the oil. To make these heart shaped ones you have to pipe a straight line on a parchment paper and shape it into a heart before dropping them into the oil.I made both the traditional as well as these heart shaped ones.Fry till golden brown.

  7. Roll them into cinnamon sugar and serve it with a chocolate sauce.
  8. Your crunchy yummy churros are ready. So Eat it up! :)
Tips:-

  1. When you heat the oil make sure the oil is hot enough. But not smoky hot.If the oil is not hot enough your churros will start melting in the oil.Yes you read it right. They'll melt. But don't heat it up till smoking point.Else your churros might get burned quickly and the inside of the dough will be raw.To know if the oil is at a right temperature drop a piece of the dough and if it swims to the top immediately and the oil bubbles you'll know your oil is ready.Once the oil is hot lower down your flame a bit.
  2. Take a fork and spin the churros into the oil so that it cooks evenly.
  3. Don't crowd the pan with a lot of them at the same time.
  4. Make sure that the material of the piping bag is a durable one. Those disposable ones are advised to be avoided.I tried them and it just tore apart.
